With a scrutinizing eye, he watched her dainty little fingers sound out the notes, going both by the notation on the page and what sounded right to her ear in the context of the whole song. He let her figure out the run on her own, knowing that making the initial mistakes would reinforce hitting the correct notes later.
"Precisely," Roderich praised when she completed the sequence on the third try. "Now, do it a couple more times. Don't worry about bringing it up to speed yet. Your mind's learned it now, but your fingers need a little while to catch up and learn it too."

Lili, hearing Roderich's praise, smiled lightly. She was happy that she'd managed, thrilled even, but very little of that pride showed through. Her cousin had enough pride for them both - and was never afraid to show it. All the same... perhaps she'd tell Gilbert about her lesson when he returned from work today. He'd be happy for her.
At Roderich's next instructions, and subsequent explanation, she nodded. "J-ja. I... I only hope that perhaps... perhaps I can manage to play it as prettily as you, Herr Edelstein..." Her cheeks flushed a pale pink as she said it, but it was true. Rather than continue to speak, however, she placed her fingers on the keys and began the run again, just as slowly as the first time. Next time, she'd attempt to hasten the pace a little.
