"Oh dear."
Lili had probably said that a thousand times in the past space of time... but it was no less meaningful for all that. She was out here, alone, without her umbrella - and the rain didn't look as though it were going to let up any time soon.
Sarah had been with her previously, but when it appeared that it was going to rain, Lili had sent the girl ahead, to perhaps hurry home before the rain started, and retrieve an umbrella. Sarah could run where Lili could not... Lili had instead taken refuge in one of the park's gazebos.
Unfortunately, the rain didn't look as though it were going to let up, and Sarah hadn't returned. Gilbert was due home soon, and Lili had to be there to make certain supper was prepared and set on the table. Not that the servants didn't know their duty - but her absence would encourage him to come back out into the rain to search for her... and she couldn't have that.
But as she stepped toward the edge of the gazebo, and held her hand out into the rain, she shivered. It was far too cold... and she'd completely ruin her jacket... silk velvet didn't appreciate the damp, much less an outright soaking... She couldn't ruin this one, then ask for another jacket... not when she ought to have been prepared. (Even though it had been perfectly sunny two hours ago when she left home.)
What could she do? Perhaps.. perhaps if she wished really, truly hard, the rain would end? She closed her eyes and clasped her hands together under her chin, vowing that she'd wish until something happened to allow her to go home.
