J OÃO FERRIERA HENRIQUES.
° N-ame || João Ferreira Henriques
° A-liases || If someone can't pronounce João, he'll ask them to call him Joe instead.
° A-ge || 27
° G-ender || Male
° F-amily || Half-brother, Antonio Fernandez Carriedo. Both parents deceased.
° E-ye color || Brown
° H-air color || Dark brown
° H-eight || 182cm (6ft)
° W-eight || 77kg (170lbs)
° D-efining features || Probably the most noticeable thing about João is the vertical scar across his left eye. He's actually partly blind in it, and if one were to look close enough, they would see that the pupil and iris are very slightly marred. He also has less formidable, more common scars across the rest of his body. He's also got a tattoo of a cross on his back.
° A-dditional features || He is tanned and well-built, and usually wears his hair in a ponytail over his shoulder. He tends to also wear a large, heavy coat, sleeveless.
° J-ob || Pirate, though he considers himself an adventurer more than anything else.
° R-eason for current profession || The thrills and the spoils - what else?
° D-istrict || See history.
° P-ersonality ||
João is mostly a laid-back, gentle and mature type. It is clear that he is a generally calm and cheerful person, kept happy by the simplest things in life. He mostly carries a slow-paced and soothing aura about him. He has odd moments of spacing out and dwelling on the past, often at the strangest of times, phases one would refer to as 'saudades', a word difficult to translate fully in English.
However, under the right circumstances, he can also maintain a mostly serious state of mind. He seems to gain almost a completely different demeanor under pressure or in intense moments, going from being happy and relaxed to being serious and silent, to the point where he can come across as cold and intimidating, the complete opposite of what he's really like. If angered enough, his rage can be terrifying.
Overall, though, he's kind-hearted, and though his timid exterior doesn't seem to show it, very courageous. He's also fairly practical and incredibly strong, both physically and mentally. If he ever puts a foot wrong, he'll feel bad about it for quite some time afterwards, and try to fix it as best he can. Otherwise, he's not so difficult to read, really.
He likes to consider himself a good old fashioned adventurerand lover-boy. He loves the sky and the ocean, especially sailing through and on them, and exploring open spaces of land. He also loves luxuries and riches, but that's kind of a given. He's also a religious man, so it's not uncommon to see him in chapels or cathedrals. Other than that, he's well-educated, chivalrous and has quite an amorous side to him, given the right moment. On the other hand, he has a hard time saying no, especially to people he's warmed to. He has crossed paths with more brutal pirates than himself before, simply for this reason. The scar over his left eye is the remenant of a debate with a pirate that turned nasty. He's got quite a few more scars all over his body, from similar experiences.

° H-istory ||
The bastard son of a wayward, womanising sailor and Tereza Ferriera, a bookshop owner whom lived above and worked in a small unit in the Trade District, João wasn't born into great wealth or comfort. His mother was struggling to make ends meet already, and couldn't afford schooling for the boy. However, he was lucky enough that he could teach himself to read, write and do mathematics by making use of the books in their shop. The books that didn't often get sold, as a matter of fact... When João was 10, the shop was repossessed by government officials, forcing he and his mother out of their home and into the slums.
Even so, despite the fact their property and practically all of their stock had been taken away from them, João managed to hold on to his favourite book - a story of a long-lost treasure in a land far away from Atheros. He believed the story was real, and was determined that one day he would find it.
Shortly after, luckily enough, Tereza managed to get a factory job in textile weaving... It wasn't so lucky, though, that the conditions were poor, and she was forced to work long hours. Unable to take João with her, he often hung around the slums with the other children there, or would wander the streets alone, as dangerous as it was. This was around the time, however, that a strange young man by the name of Antonio Fernandez Carriedo crossed his path, claiming to be his older brother. Tereza hadn't kept the identity of João's father from him. He knew who he was - however - he wasn't aware he had an older brother. Antonio visted him a couple of times, unbeknown to Tereza.
João envied Antonio, by the sheer fact that he was a sailor. He had always been fascinated by ships and trade, but Tereza was very strict, most likely due to paranoia, and didn't let him near the cliffside or the docks. Yet, after catching a nasty virus, and have overexerted herself for work, Tereza passed away when João was 14. Still living in the slums and having been orphaned, with no where else to go, João decided to join an airship crew, with the hopes that he might come across the treasure in his book. Managing to get on the good side of a handful of (what he assumed were) sky-bound sailors, remarkably, by outsmarting them in a game of cards he had learnt on the streets, they took him in. However, he didn't find out until he was enrolled that they were - as a matter of fact - pirates.
The Captain of the ship was notoriously ruthless, and didn't appreciate the "extra weight" his men had brought aboard. Because of this, he started off at the very bottom, being used for nothing but swabbing the deck and heaving cargo about. It was only as he got older that he progressed in the ranks - he learnt how to fight with a sword, how to fire a gun, how to navigate a ship - the usual basics. A few years later, when he was up a few ranks, a boy slightly younger than him named Arthur Kirkland was taken in on the same ship, after having stowed away aboard it. Despite the fact Arthur started off in a bad position on the ship, João became friends with him shortly after.
A few years further down the line, and João realised, just after turning 21, that he wasn't going to find the legendary treasure he desired under the rule of the ruthless captain. One night, whilst the ship was docked in a far-off country, he managed to break out and head off alone. He certainly expected pursuit from the crew, but somehow, came across none. From there he rounded up his own crew from various towns and villages; and came into possession of his own ship. Over the years since then, he's been searching endlessly for the treasure, but has been deserted by his crew - one-by-one - as their mission seemed futile. He has now returned to Granor alone to seek out new information - and possibly a new crew.
° R-oleplay example ||
((Historical, based off a page from a doujin called Maaf, which is centric on the colonisation of South East Asia. Not Atheros verse, but I do feel it's relevant anyway.))
There is silence, and it's as if time has stopped, and is delaying the inevitable. The ocean is calm, the sky is empty and the sun is beating down, gracing the water and refracting, sparkling. The ships are still, all seventeen or eighteen of them; the one beneath his feet is so still that it's almost as if he's walking on land again... But no. The land is on the horizon - Malaysia is close enough; so very close, and yet so very far.
The raids will prove successful, he tells himself. He is the Portuguese Empire, and this is his conquest, and Malacca is peaceful now but will thrive under his rule. He needs these thoughts, and the convincing words of his King and noblemen, to know that the actions will not be in vain. To secure the spice trade. To remain on par with Espanha and Holanda and Inglaterra. For whatever reason he needs.
He draws in a breath through his nose, and shuts his eyes, and now in the otherwise utter silence he can hear the waves, as small as they are, lapping against the side of the ship. For a moment, he equates himself to the ocean; the great expanse he had once dreamed of exploring - that very dream now a reality. He thinks that the ocean, like himself, can one minute be serene and harmless... And raging and destructive the next.
'What have I become?'
The comparison is unsettling.
He seeks what little solace he can find by clutching at the cross around his neck tightly, bringing the worn shape to his lips. And he asks - he asks knowing that his request is too much to weigh against his actions, as the fleet begins to ready the cannons, anticipating his orders to attack like a pack of ravenous wolves, watching, waiting... "Please forgive me."
The necklace drops down to his armoured chest with a gentle chink, and with another deep exhale, his eyes are open again, and Malacca is back in view, and though he prays his redemption doesn't fall on deaf ears, he must give the order now, or never.
"Fire!"
