Once there was a wise king who ruled over the land with a firm, but just hand. As time passed, the king grew old and sick with no heirs to succeed him. When he died the kingdom fell into disarray; different parties went to war with each other for who would succeed as the next ruler. This civil war lasted for 6 long months, with the citizens of the city living in fear for their future.
There could only be one victor, however, and when the dust finally settled, it was the Draconians who remained. They had seized control with the power and cunning of their heraldic beast – the dragon. Under their guidance, the city prospered… but at what price? Some would say the price was the lives spent fighting… others, those that were usually hushed, insisted that freedom was the price they’d all paid.
What had happened to the losers, though? The Fenezians, the other main party, had escaped from the city and from persecution – or had gone underground. As time passed, slowly but surely (just as the Phoenix will do) they rose from the ashes. Fifty years after the end of the Great Struggle, as the Civil War had come to be called, the Fenezian Phoenix became active again, though they were given a new name: Ruthians. It was only small time skirmishes at first… small time terrorist attacks, the Leader and the Lawmakers insisted.
Things continued in this strain until the year 70, AP (Anno Populi – the new yearly naming system implemented by the Draconians). The Ruthians destroyed the hospital in the Second District. Some speculate that the Ruthians were trying to make a point, or were trying to make themselves known; others insist that the Ruthians were weeding out corruption and avarice; the true reason is much simpler: one of the Lawmakers was visiting the hospital that day. Many lives – innocent and not – were lost and changed that day. It has taken four years for the city to find the funds to rebuild the hospital… and those funds were, perhaps, somewhat unwillingly given. After all, had the so-called terrorists not destroyed the hospital in the first place, the poorer citizens would have received the better care they so desired through these years.
Nowadays, citizens go on with their lives as normally as possible, for even though there may soon be another Civil War brewing, they still must do their jobs and support their families. Military patrols have been implemented, for safety and peace of mind. Pirates continue to maraud and steal; they'd sensed an easy target in the war-weakened city, and had never truly left. The Ruthians continue to gain support and wreak havoc for the Draconians, who in turn will pressure the Lawmakers and Leader to implement new laws and alter the system to find the Ruthians. Freedom is such a fleeting concept, after all… what will you do to protect yours?
