Ivan generally has an outward aura of calm, punctuated by extremes of emotion that strike fear into those who recognize what they foreshadow. Ivan is the type to bottle his emotions, and then even mask them if they do escape. He will giggle with anger, smile with sadness, and laugh with fear. Ivan is lonely and defensive at the same time: he desperately wants friends, but is unwilling to make himself vulnerable by opening himself up to people.
Ivan appears childish and insane to the outside observer, and they might not be entirely wrong. He’s unwittingly cruel to those he is close to, thinking that he is helping them in some way, showing their incorrectness, or suchlike. He is not cruel all the time, but his brutality comes often unexpected so that whoever is subject to them is generally caught off guard. While he doesn’t pay special attention to his periods of brutality, others are well aware of his propensity for violent outbursts, and try to avoid Ivan because of them.
Ivan is always slow to open himself up to others, a lesson he’s learned from his violent past. If he feels slighted, any trust he had could be washed away in an instant, to be replaced with sadness and anger. It is much better to have Ivan as an ally than as an enemy; his techniques may not be the most finessed, but he gets the job done and can be as unrelenting an enemy as General Winter.
While Ivan is often in control and will stifle his feelings into little smiles, a giggle, or a laugh, there will be times when his frustration and anger will burst through like a temper tantrum. Depending on the situation he will express his feelings in little acts such as “losing” valued possessions of his source of anger, or he can express himself in more direct acts such as a violent beating with Boris (the pipe).

• Ivan is the son of Kievan Rus.
• Ivan drinks because his Sight grants him the ability to see many things. Among them is a ghost which he calls General Winter, who haunts Ivan frequently. His sight is strongest, and therefore he is tormented the worst when he is sober. Ivan calls him General Winter, because he is clearly a military man, and he haunts Ivan most frequently during the cold months.

° H-istory ||
Ivan was raised in Zequea by his biological father, Kievan Rus, as a small child. When he was 9, his father abandoned him. Ivan decided to go on a search for his father, telling his sisters he would find him. He wandered for a bit (getting lost in the process) before he fell in with a wandering man after a couple days in the wilderness. This man, Mongolia, eventually adopted him as his son, but it was not a happy relationship. Mongolia was an abusive father, mainly out of the attitude that he saved Ivan’s life, and therefore he could do with him what he wanted; Ivan was eternally indebted to him. Beatings with fresh branches were common for Ivan, who tried to keep up with his father’s demands and failed, or did not do a good enough job. When he genuinely misbehaved, such as talking back or getting in a fight (regardless if he started it or not) his father dunked Ivan in some water for a bit.
Mongolia tended to drink when he had the money, and when he drank he became violent towards Ivan, where he was normally only abusive as punishment. When he was drunk, his true feelings came out: Ivan was scum, an inbred mountain-dweller who deserved to die. The strings of insults would last seemingly for hours, and Ivan dared not leave; such disrespect would probably result in more whippings. The physical and emotional abuse the boy endured was tremendous, until something snapped. He stopped caring. It didn’t matter what this man said or did to hurt him, Ivan was safe. He was safe as long as he pictured the future: a future where he was strong, stronger than everybody else. Slowly, this became reality as Ivan grew, and grew. His father continued to abuse him, and he continued to take the abuse, but the scenario had changed: Ivan was a time-bomb now.
The fateful day where Ivan took no more whippings, no more dunking, and no more insults came the day after his 14th birthday. At this point, his father had grown somewhat frailer; the years were not treating Mongolia well. His father was about to dunk him for asking if he got a birthday present (whether Ivan had really expected one, or if he was simply looking for a fight that day, he won’t tell) when Ivan gripped his father’s arm. With a smile, he twisted his father’s arm behind his back, and dunked him instead. His father writhed, but Ivan held him under for a substantial amount of time. Ivan brought him back up before he drowned, throwing him on the ground.
He kicked his father until Mongolia stopped moving, before Ivan collected his belongings and walked away from their current home to go into the main section of Zequea. There, he looked for work, something that would take him away from here. The military recruiters scooped him up happily and he joined the military as a powder monkey on an airship. Over the years he worked his way up from powder monkey to the rank of footman. During a particularly vicious fight with some Ruthians, Ivan showed “valor” and “heroism” in combat, and was awarded commemorative medals by Alric himself. His valor and heroism could more accurately be described as brutal annihilation of the crewmembers in the belly of a Ruthian vessel shortly after boarding. As the first to board the enemy ship, he was shot at, and did sustain some injuries, but Ivan was no stranger to pain; he pushed on, ignoring the musket balls, and cleaved through the Ruthian defensive line with his saber. The Ruthians panicked and ran into the belly of their ship, abandoning their posts. The military footmen quickly seized the engine room and bridge, and steered the ship towards military lines.
In the meantime, Ivan searched the ship for the remaining gunners and Ruthian footmen. When he found them, he did not fight them directly but instead smoked them out of the cabin by putting a bucket of coals near the cabin’s ventilator. As they ran out, he cleaved them in the back with his sabre. When the airship reached port in a military citadel, the Ruthian crew was completely dead. Ivan was rapidly rushed to medical professionals to treat his multiple musket ball wounds. While the loss of potential information was recognized, the capture of an airship for the cause of the military was very much appreciated, and Ivan was lauded as a hero, if only because it made for good propaganda. As a reward for his efforts, Ivan was handpicked to be the guard of Alric’s adopted son, Conrad, (who we know is actually his biological son, but in canon, only Alric knows!) Currently, Ivan is still a guard of Conrad, although he eyes the position of Commander as he feels he would be a better leader who would reduce the military’s corruption.

° R-oleplay example ||
Where am I? Ivan thought, looking around at the snow covered forest that surrounded him. He had no answer for many minutes, and sat in the small clearing he was in. Soon the ground rumbled, almost imperceptibly. The young Ivan noted it with idle curiosity, wondering what could make the ground rumble from so far away. A wave of birds flew up from the trees in front of him, and then he saw them: panzer tanks wove steadily through the Russian forest, crushing bushes and striking fear into Ivan’s heart. The German war-machines creaked forward, and Ivan turned to flee as shots rang out and bullets whizzed above his head.
Storm-troopers marched out from behind the crawling tanks, and ran in pursuit of the little Russian boy. Wait, this is being dream, I am not needing worry! Ivan turned to face the German troops. “Do not move, we will shoot!” The Germans yelled in fractured Russian.
“I won’t move, but you will die, German pig-dogs!” Ivan yelled back in his native tongue, a gleeful smile on his face. The German troops were taken aback by such a young child’s boastful claims. Now I picture them dying……but nothing happened.
Even in your dreams, Ivan, you are useless to defend yourself. Pathetic and weak. You are so weak that I must save you every time. I will kill them, but then I will kill you as punishment for being so idiotically weak.
“General Winter, you are not needing be doing that! I am strong …”
Ivan trailed off as a great snowstorm flung itself into the German line. The soldiers fell to the ground like toy soldiers and were soon buried in a white blanket. The tanks froze to a halt.
Now it is your turn Ivan. You are last. Ukraine has already succumbed to my grip, surrender to me.
“Why would you kill her, Winter, why!?” Ivan’s tears froze to his face before they fell. General Winter did not answer, but instead the storm moved up towards Ivan. He scrambled to get out of the way of the storm, but he was overtaken. The snow piled over him, pinning him with its weight. He inhaled snow as the ripping winds whipped the snowfall into a horizontal. Sisters…I am sorry. Ivan closed his eyes, feeling his heart slow. He grew tired, and his breath became slow and shallow…
Ivan woke up with a shiver. “Ukraine!...” He looked around; he was alone in his room, although the window was open. Ivan rubbed his arms to bring some warmth back to them as he walked over to the window. He shut the window, and exited his room. Is not being good start to day, Ivan thought. Ivan decided he would distract himself from his terrible dream by having spending some time with his good friends, the Baltics.
