In the world of Atheros, Francis Bonnefoy's name is synonymous with hedonism. He has perfected the art of idle pleasure and is proud of his reputation as the most notorious noble alive. His estate is among the most extravagant, teeming with lavish entertainments and eager guests of every sort, to the point of being laughably ridiculous.
But beneath the carefully-constructed facade of uselessness and self-indulgence, Francis is seething. Having been betrayed and used too many times, he does not hesitate to manipulate and scheme to get his way. The motivation from his losses, coupled with his shrewdness and ability to read situations and people easily, makes it easy for him to influence and persuade others if he chooses. He can also be spiteful and unflinchingly malicious when crossed.
For all his anger and hidden agendas, though, Francis still holds onto simple pleasures. He has firmly believed in true love and fairy tale romances since childhood and hopes that he can finally pursue it after he has achieved what he has set out to do. He is mocked for this brand of naivete, but he stands by it and even goes so far to preach about romance.
With people he genuinely likes, Francis is constantly bursting with affection and is more than eager to spread it around. Because of this, he is overly flirtatious to the point of being physically and verbally inappropriate.
His open attitude and love of fun earns him many friends that he would go to lengths for - provided their interests don't directly conflict with his own, and that they would someday repay him back for his kindness. To solidify his image as a genial caretaker, he has appointed himself everyone's "Big Brother" and is willing to take those less fortunate under his wing.
Brimming with natural charisma, he thrives on attention and praise. He has a flair for drama and wit that he employs when he is playing the noble. And while he is eager to make a spectacle of himself, he knows when to keep his head down and avoid stunts that could jeopardize his goals.
One of his more sordid and recurring antics is his tendency to bare his body in public and even try to force others to do the same. A true exhibitionist, his vanity has him convinced that his body must be admired and that he has nothing to hide.
This arrogance extends to his belief in his superiority. Francis believes he is among the most refined and sophisticated individuals in Granor, and has no qualms telling others so. He openly criticizes others for being uncivilized and behind compared to him. In his elevated opinion of himself, he is selective about which things and situations warrant his attention while disregarding the things he does not feel are important enough.

As the son of two prominent figures, Francis grew up in a world of privilege and pleasures. His father was a second-generation member of the Draconians and his mother was a famous socialite. He and his younger sister were not far from the affairs of the governement, spending their childhood near the Palace.
When he was thirteen, his parents disappeared, leaving him and his sister without any other family. His father had been under suspicion by his fellow Draconians for some time, for reasons undisclosed. Francis had no knowledge of any of this business when the military recruited him under orders from the Leader. Military life would keep Francis under heavy guard and on the governemnt's side. Francis, having no such desire to join, flatly refused. He was forced to reconsider, however, when his sister was taken and kept under house arrest.
Francis, who loved his sister over everything else, threw himself into his military training. He was not skilled with strategies and large-scale battles, but he found he did better when fighting one-on-one or shooting, which were perhaps some of the few abilities that earned him a place in the military. He remained in the army for eight years with limited contact with his sister and no knowledge of what had happened to his parents. Throughout the years, he noticed how tight and unforgiving the government's reins on the people are, but kept his observations and disapproval to himself. The length of his stint in the military had nearly earned him the title of lieutenant, but he never received it because of his sister.
His sister, having grown tired of her confinement, plotted to escape Granor and nearly succeeded. However, she was betrayed by her waiting woman, and so was captured and imprisoned. She was charged with treason, but the details were falsified. Francis had only learned of these events after she was sentenced to death. He left his post and attended her execution incognito, attempting to free her, but he was discovered and caught. After watching her hang, he was imprisoned and interrogated on the charge of conspiring with his sister, but was released when his superior vouched for him.
He was required to return to his military duties, but was too devastated to perform satisfactorily. He was deemed useless and a liability, and so was unofficially dismissed. In the days that followed, he returned to his family's estate, now his, in the Nobles' Residence. There, his hatred of the military grew into a desire for vengeance.
He traveled Atheros in search of the Ruthians, hoping to join them in their fight against the government. It was a few months into this search that he was captured by a Ruthian ship.
His hopes of joining this rebel force were quashed, though, when the rebels recognized him as the son of a noblewoman and a member of the military in his own right. Francis' protests fell on deaf ears, and he was tortured before he was set to be killed. It was revealed to him, with great relish, that his mother had been captured by a Ruthian leader after his father died, and killed within a few days..
But just before he was to join his family, a military fleet met the Ruthians. In the skirmish that followed, Francis was able to escape and hide in a military ship until it made port. Francis fled into the countryside and hid, now nursing two grudges. He waited until he believed it was safe enough to travel back to Granor and boarded an ordinary barge.
As luck would have it, the ship was apprehended midway by pirates just after taking off, and Francis was captured once more. Instead of attempting to escape, Francis saw his opportunity and cooperated with the pirates, requesting to join. After much deliberation and threats, he was accepted reluctantly.
While sailing, he used his freedom and his share of loot to plot against the military, the government, and the Ruthians. When the old captain died and was succeeded by Francis' crewmate, Francis took leave and returned to Granor. His return immediately set the court abuzz, since he had been missing without a trace for years. In Granor, he proceeded to build his sprawling estate and his reputation as an indolent, inept noble.
While in Granor, he secretly forged alliances in his effort to destroy those who had abused him. He gradually set up a network of spies posing as courtesans and mistresses of the noblemen, government and military officials belong. Most of these women, and even men, were either prostitutes or beggars that he found and secretly trained to work for him. He also was finally a to pursue his fascination with poisons, which he develops and uses to quietly dispatch his enemies.
Though he enjoyed his new lavish lifestyle, he soon found himself yearning for the skies again, away from the insipid nobles and military supporters. He tracked down his former crew and asked to return. He was accepted grudgingly once more, and he disappeared again for a few months. Many people concluded that he had somehow gotten lost or captured while traveling, ridiculing his incompetency.
He currently divides his time between sailing as a pirate and posing as a noble in Granor while methodically disposing of his enemies.

Francis wrinkled his nose as he studied Arthur. His attitude was as unpleasant and rude as ever, though he had certainly changed - and those eyebrows had, if possible, grown thicker. Then he paused when he realized that Arthur sharing a room with him meant that Arthur was a fire-user, as his collar color indicated.
He snorted. "Believe me, rosbif, if I had the choice to share a room with someone, you would have been at the bottom of the list, after a ferret's carcass," he shot back. "To think they let in common talent like you in here! I was led to believe that this was a school for people with special abilities. Like moi, obviously."
Francis glanced at the wardrobe Arthur indicated to, staring for a moment before his face contorted in horror.
"What is this injustice?" he cried. "I simply cannot fit all I own into that tiny box! What do they expect me to do? Fold my clothes? Non, non, they are too delicate! They might wrinkle!" he wailed.
When he received no sympathy, Francis scowled. He began to grumble under his breath, unpacking his bags and arranging his belongings with unnecessary force.
As he laid out his clothes, he pondered on his dilemma of his lack of space. Perhaps he could persuade Arthur to make more room for him. But as he glanced at his roommate's grouchy face, he knew it would take more effort than he wanted to put in. He sighed. He had to try.
"Arthur," he said, adopting a sweet tone, "do cheer up, won't you? We'll have an incredible year together!"
Francis tried not to grimace and plowed on. "I'm in a bit of a problem here. You see, this excuse of a wardrobe the school has provided me is not large enough for my belongings. I was wondering, mon ami, whether you would be so kind as to offer me some of your unused closet space?"
To plead his case, Francis propped up a full-length mirror against the wall. “Look! I can even share this gilded mirror with you! That way, you don’t have to venture into the world looking like a scruffy barbarian ever again!”
Determined to demonstrate, he plucked up one if his shirts at random. He held it up to the mirror and admired himself. Ah, as heartbreakingly beautiful as always! He turned from side to side experimentally, viewing himself in all angles. Still beautiful.
"See, rosbif?” he said. "Does this not look marvelous on me? It makes my eyes shine like rare sea glass!" He blew a kiss into his reflection to emphasize the fact.
